ACADEMIC HORSEMANSHIP
immersive practice & study in Eugene, Oregon

Academic horsemanship combines the centuries-old methods of historical riding masters with modern discoveries in equine biomechanics, anatomy and behavior to create an empowering, independently-driven educational experience for today's horse and rider--it is the purest form of classical dressage. This is a beautiful, self-expressive way of riding that prioritizes communication, comprehension, freedom, harmony, mutual respect, and so much more. It provides an extraordinary foundation for any horse and has the power to heal trauma of mind, body, and spirit in the horse/human partnership. Best of all is the enduring friendship we build with our horses as we traverse the academic path. We strive to:

-
Recognize and cherish the horse’s emotional life
-
Nurture the horse/human partnership
-
Assess thoroughly our horse's conformation and identify its natural asymmetries in order to improve upon them
-
Foster willingness and cooperation in our interactions with our horse
-
Take time to study the riding process and have clarity in the things we ask of our horse
-
Create individualized training goals to promote comfort, fitness, longevity, soundness, and emotional contentment
-
Educate the horse with purpose
-
Accept graciously the horse’s mental and physical limitations and work within them
-
Make riding a joy for both horse and human
